The "darkness" of car window tinting is rated by its visible light transmission (VLT)—how much light it lets through the film. This type of window tint is illegal for most vehicles, but some exceptions do exist. For instance, a limousine can often have this tint. With a 20% tint, you can look inside the car from the outside while up close, but it’s still hard. With a 35% tint, you can peer into the car with ease, even though the darker appearance is established.


This level of tint is usually in the 15-20% range. This is a safe range for factory tinting because many states place restrictions on the level of tint vehicles can have. This tint falls within that range for a vast majority of states. One of my cars came with 20% tint on the rear side windows and rear window from the factory; it's very obviously darker than the 35% fronts but cops have never given me any problems. Factory privacy glass on the rear and rear side windows are exempt from 35% limit.


The lower percentages allow less light in. The higher you go in percentages, the more light is allowed into the vehicle. Vehicle window tints come in four standard percentage options — 50 percent, 35 percent, 20 percent, and 5 percent. Fifty percentage blockage is a standard option for most owners. Any given shade up front will be darker or lighter depending on the back windows. 20% all around wont be as dark as 20 in front and limo in back. I got Xpel 30 or 35% (can’t remember) on the side windows and with my white interior you can’t really tell to much visually. I would suggest 20% with the bright white interior and maybe 30% for black interior. While 20% tint may not be as common as 35% in terms of legally tinting your windows, it’s an excellent choice for rear side windows if you want to darken things up a bit.
